What's this?
Flatiron is a board game for 2 players in which you play as companies tasked with participating in the construction of the legendary Flatiron Building , a New York skyscraper built in 1902. Each turn, you will move your architect around Manhattan to buy cards, activate actions, erect pillars and build new floors of the building.
How do you play?
A two-step game round
Each turn consists of two mandatory actions:
-
Move your architect
to one of the 5 available areas: the four streets (Broadway, 5th Avenue, 22nd Street, 23rd Street) or the town hall. -
Perform an action in the area where you are.
Three possibilities:-
Buy a card
-
Activate all visible actions in your column linked to this street
-
Take $2
-
Buy cards
On the streets, you buy the top card of the deck , then add it to your board in the corresponding column.
Each card offers two actions, but you only keep one side visible (top or bottom) depending on where you place it in the column.
At the town hall, you can buy a Decree card , which offers points at the end of the game.
Build a floor
As soon as the 3 pillars are placed on the active floor:
-
You pay $5
-
You install the new floor from the town hall
-
You earn 6 victory points
-
The street maps are being updated.
-
The next floor becomes active
The newspapers
The “Newspapers” tokens offer powerful bonus actions (cost reduction, construction, money, etc.).
End of game
Add the following points to the points earned during the game:
-
Reputation on each street:
+5 HP if positive, -3 HP if negative -
The points of the decrees
Is it good?
Flatiron is a tactical, opportunistic, and original game for two players . It offers an excellent strategic duel where every decision counts and timing is crucial. Every action has an impact on the course of the game, for both you and your opponent.
Knowing when to place your pillars, building a floor right under your opponent’s nose, or taking advantage of an unexpected opening is what makes the game so enjoyable. Interaction is primarily indirect, but it’s very present and particularly pleasant , because everything hinges on good timing: acting too early or too late can turn the tide of the round.
The game also offers a successful board building : you gradually build your engine, you skillfully choose the high or low position of the cards, you carefully plan your actions and you trigger very rewarding combos for players who like to optimize.
The components—wooden pillars and a building that rises floor by floor—offer a truly enjoyable visual and playful experience.
However, the game suffers from some ergonomic and iconographic issues : many icons look alike, and the first few games require frequent reference to the rules.
The opportunistic side may also not appeal to everyone: it is not uncommon to prepare something for several turns… only to be overtaken by the opponent who takes advantage of it first.
In summary , Flatiron remains an excellent 2-player game : original, tactical, opportunistic, and driven by a very successful engine progression system. It will easily find a place in your game collection.
