Hot Streak review: our opinion on the wacky betting and racing game

What's this?

Hot Streak is a completely wacky betting and racing game where players wager on unlikely sports mascots competing on a racetrack. The goal isn’t to directly control the competitors, but to bet intelligently on their performance while subtly influencing the race using secret cards.

How do you play?

A game of Hot Streak takes place over 3 successive races . Each race follows a simple three-phase structure: Bets, Race, then Payments .

1. The Paris Phase (The “Draft”)

Before the start, the players must draft (take turns selecting) 2 betting tickets . The selection is done according to a “serpentine draft” system (the last player to choose the first ticket chooses the first one in the second round) .

  • Ticket types: You can bet on the final ranking of a mascot or on a secondary bet , such as a mascot being eliminated or getting knocked out .

  • Safe or Risky: As soon as you pick up a ticket, you must choose to place it on its Safe side (moderate but sure winnings) or its Risky side (huge winnings if you are right, but risk of losing money if you fail) .

2. The Race

Before the race begins, each player secretly chooses one card from their hand to add to the race deck . This is your only way to influence the mascots’ fate ! Once the 18-card deck is shuffled, the player acting as the Dealer burns 3 cards and begins revealing the remaining cards one by one .

Possible effects:

  • The mascots are moved according to the cards: advance a number of spaces, jump to the next star, knock a mascot over, make it turn around, or make it deviate from the corridor (with risk of collision!).
  • If a mascot that has fallen over falls back down, or goes off the track, it is disqualified.
  • If the packet runs out, we fold the track, reshuffle and restart.
  • The race ends as soon as 3 of the 4 mascots have finished (arrival or disqualification).

Phase 3: The gains

The bookmaker pays each player according to their tickets. The entire process is repeated for 3 races, the 3rd being spiced up with a twist: each player doubles one of their two tickets (wins… or losses).

Is it good?

Hot Streak focuses on one thing: pure atmosphere and immediate fun, without any frills. Don’t bother looking for a strategic racing game or an ultra-calculating betting game here. The idea of having players bet on a race governed almost entirely by the luck of the draw immediately creates a buzz around the table, with a clever mix of tension and utter absurdity, where your favorite mascot might turn around just before the finish line.

One of the game’s most original ideas is that everyone knows a large part of the race deck. This allows players to estimate each mascot’s chances and try to anticipate how the race will unfold. But the real subtlety comes from the secret cards that players add to the shared deck before each round. This touch of bluffing and anticipation provides just the right amount of interaction and can lead to unexpected and hilarious plot twists.

The draft-style betting system is also very well designed. You spend your time weighing the pros and cons: should you play it safe or go all in with the “Risky” option on a ticket? You’re constantly trying to analyze the visible cards, while also trying to guess what the other players might have added to the deck.

Hot Streak is first and foremost a game of pure atmosphere. Between the constant plot twists, improbable collisions, and utterly absurd disqualifications, it’s hard to take your eyes off the track. Even when you’re not directly involved in the action, you remain captivated by the spectacle.

The game’s other major strength is its impeccable production. The mascots are enormous, highly detailed, and instantly endearing. The game is brimming with humor, whether in the illustrations, the text, or the situations that arise naturally during gameplay. The retractable game board also adds to the overall charm. In terms of components, it’s absolutely flawless.

But this generosity also comes at a price: the cost. Expect to pay around fifty euros for a party game, which may seem high to some players. That said, given the quality and originality of the components, the price is perfectly justified.

Some may also criticize its pervasive chaos and heavy reliance on chance. If you’re looking for a racing game where every decision is calculated and you precisely control your strategy, Hot Streak might not be for you.

Ultimately, Hot Streak is a true success in the party game category. This blend of betting, bluffing, chaos, and completely unpredictable races works wonderfully. The game transforms a simple race of wacky mascots into a hilarious spectacle where each revealed card triggers shouts of joy, bursts of laughter, or howls of frustration. An excellent party game, ideal for livening up an evening with friends without any stress.
