BGG Fact Sheet: The Warring States period was a pivotal period in Chinese history, marked by incessant warfare, significant bureaucratic and military reforms, and the consolidation of power between rival states. The game takes place around 260 BC, a time when the Seven Warring Kingdoms were engaged in bitter conflict, both among themselves and against nomadic groups like the Xiongnu, who posed a threat from the north. Although sections of the Great Wall of China had been built as early as the 8th century BC, the later years of the Warring States period saw a sharp increase in defensive construction projects. Before Qin finally unified the kingdoms, extensive fortifications, watchtowers, and new sections of the wall were erected to strengthen the defenses. In Tianxia, players take on the role of heads of noble families eager to gain prestige and favor with the powerful rulers of the Seven Warring States. The game is played over four rounds, during which you install governors in the regions and strengthen the power of rival ruling houses, thereby gaining their favor. You also sell goods to merchant ships plying the Chinese coast to enrich yourself and gain other advantages. However, don’t forget the nomadic warriors who pose a constant threat to the northern borders of the Seven Kingdoms. You must therefore train soldiers and build walls and towers to weaken the invaders and protect your interests, thereby gaining prestige. With each round, the nomads advance toward the borders of the Seven Kingdoms and gather in ever-increasing numbers. Once the border is reached, a battle ensues that affects all players. At the end of the game, the best governor, politician, merchant, and protector wins.
