What's this?
Terrorscape is an asymmetrical game of confrontation and deduction in which one player takes on the role of a killer hunting three survivors, themselves controlled by one or more players. The game takes place in a storm-ravaged mansion, separated by a screen: the killer and the survivors move on two distinct planes, each with different information.
How do you play?
A game unfolds by alternating a turn for the survivors , then a turn for the killer , until a victory condition is met.
🧍♂️ The Survivors’ Tour
Each round begins with:
-
Remove the Noise tokens
-
Check if a victory condition has been met (radio repaired or 5 keys collected at the exit)
Next, each survivor performs one main action , out of six possible options:
1️⃣ Move (1 to 2 spaces)
The survivors move between adjacent locations, unless a door is blocked by an obstacle placed by the killer.
2️⃣ Withdraw your Fear tokens
Accumulating too much fear causes a scream… and therefore noise. This action helps to avoid revealing one’s position.
3️⃣ Use a special action
Each survivor has their own unique ability, and some items also allow for special actions: healing, moving through a secret passage, etc.
4️⃣ Remove an obstacle
Survivors can remove a blockage placed by the killer on a door, by announcing it.
5️⃣ Repairing the radio
Only in the living room can survivors progress along the repair track. Each repair generates noise. Once all 5 repairs are completed, a 5-lap countdown begins before rescue arrives.
6️⃣ Search a place
In certain specific locations, survivors can draw Item cards (weapons, healing items, tools… or keys). But searching can also generate noise.
After all the survivors have played:
-
A survivor performs a discovery step (draws 2 cards and possibly keeps 1)
-
Survivors must report all locations where noise has been generated
Noise is central: it is the killer’s main source of information.
🔪 The Killer’s Turn
The killer is playing alone against everyone.
His turn unfolds as follows:
1️⃣ Reappear (if it was in stealth mode)
2️⃣ Use Quick Ability cards (detection, movement, fear…)
3️⃣ Choose between:
-
Use a Special Ability card
OR -
Perform two actions from the following:
-
Move
-
Search (check if a survivor is in the same location)
-
4️⃣ Optionally use a Slow Ability card.
5️⃣ Draw 3 cards (and potentially level up).
When the killer performs a Search action and a survivor is present, an encounter is triggered:
-
The survivor rolls defense dice (modified by fear and objects).
-
If his defense is sufficient, he repels the killer.
-
Otherwise, he suffers an injury.
-
Two injuries eliminate one survivor.
-
If a survivor is eliminated, the killer wins immediately.
Is it good?
What immediately stands out when playing Terrorscape is its imposing equipment, especially its massive screen which creates a perfect physical and psychological separation between the two sides.
The survivors must plan their movements, trying to be unpredictable, while the killer must use cunning to interpret sound signals while concealing their own intentions. The core mechanic relies on a system of deduction based on noise: this constant cat-and-mouse game, where neither can see the other, creates a palpable psychological tension.
To win, each side has specific cards and skills to create the necessary chaos. The wide variety of characters (survivors and killers alike), each with unique playstyles and abilities, offers excellent replayability. This pronounced asymmetry is the game’s greatest strength, providing radically different experiences depending on the role chosen.
While the game is accessible and smooth, it does require a good understanding of the general rules as well as the specific abilities of each character. This can be intimidating during the first few games, as you have to juggle several rulebooks.
On the downside, the setup is rather lengthy, mainly due to assembling and disassembling the cardboard mansion, which could eventually become damaged. Once the game is set up, we recommend playing several rounds to make the most of this preparation time. Furthermore, the experience can be frustrating if a survivor is eliminated prematurely, sometimes bringing the game to an abrupt end.
However, these minor drawbacks don’t detract from the overall enjoyment. Terrorscape offers a highly immersive, asymmetrical horror experience, where tension mounts with every sound detected behind its spectacular screen. It’s a strategic and bloody game of hide-and-seek that will delight horror movie fans with its electrifying atmosphere and exceptional components.
