Review Glen More II: Chronicles

What's this?

In Glen More II: Chronicles, each player takes on the role of the leader of a Scottish clan, from the era of the early Middle Ages to the 19th century, seeking to expand their territory and wealth.

How do you play?

The central mechanic of Glen More II: Chronicles is that the last player on a circular track of tiles (or rondel) advances as much as he wants on this track to take a tile.
< br />After paying the cost, he places this tile in his territory, thus activating this tile and all neighboring tiles, triggering the production of resources, movement points, VP, etc.

Then, the player who is last on this circular track takes his turn and so on.

There is also a market in the center of the board which allows you to acquire resources and resell them.

You should also not forget to collect important places and characters for victory points.

Once you have recruited a character, you You can then place tokens bearing your clan’s symbol on the travel board to benefit from various bonuses.

The game takes place over four rounds, symbolized by four piles of tiles.
< br />After each round, a scoring phase occurs where players compare their number of whiskey barrels, Scots in the castle, cards and characters with the player with the fewest items in each category, receiving points. victory points (VP) based on the difference.

After four rounds, additional victory points are awarded for gold coins and certain cards and tiles, while penalties are assessed in based on territory size, comparing each player’s territory to the smallest in play.

The “Chronicles” in the title – a set of eight expansions to the base game – are an important part of these new mechanics. Each Chronicle adds a new gameplay element to the base game.

Is it good?

Glen More II: Chronicles is an excellent board game that will appeal to fans of strategy and tile laying. Its circular track mechanic, or rondel, is very interesting from the point of view of reflection: it requires making choices, for example whether to take a tile at all costs, but also to suspend your game for a few turns in waiting for our adversaries to catch up. The big strategy that we will have put in place will happen on this track.

The game is easy to learn, offers a wide variety of parts and is enriched by numerous modules that renew the experience.

I would have a small complaint regarding the crest/travel board, which is not very thematic and seems a little disconnected from the rest of the game.

But if you’re looking for a strategic tile-laying game, Glen More II: Chronicles is a top option.
