Review Everdell

What's this?

Within the lovely valley of Everdell, beneath the boughs of towering trees, among winding streams and mossy hollows, a civilization of forest creatures thrives and expands. From Everfrost to Bellsong, many years have passed, but the time has come to colonize new territories and establish new cities. You will be the leader of a group of creatures determined to accomplish this task. There are buildings to build, animated characters to meet, events to organize; you have a busy year ahead of you.

How do you play?

On your turn you can either:

➡️ Place one of your workers on an available space on the game board. You can immediately recover the indicated resources or carry out the specific action of this location.

➡️ Play a card from your hand or from the area of face-up cards on the board called the Meadow. To play a card, you must pay the cost of the resources indicated on the card.

The card can be free if you have the appropriate building in your playing zone. (Example the Palace allows you to get the queen for free).

➡️ If all your workers are deployed, you can prepare for the next season. This involves recovering all your workers, gaining new workers and carrying out the specific action of the following season.

At the end of the game your victory points will be: the base points of your cards, card bonus points, your Points tokens and your events.

Is it good?

I have a deep affection for Everdell with his absolutely charming illustrations. The game skillfully mixes worker placement, resource management and the card table.

I love watching my city take shape before my eyes, while seeing my action engine gain power.

At the start of the first season, it feels like you’re not accomplishing much, then the combinations slowly start to come together.

What I particularly appreciate is the need to make choices, because we are forced to only include 15 cards in our table, while the desire to integrate everything is strong.

The interaction between players is also somewhat present, whether through open buildings, the coveted locations on the board that are fought over, the meadow maps accessible to all, or the competition for events.

Everdell offers a remarkable variety of games thanks to the diversity of card powers, action locations, events, and its multitude of expansions, which are numerous, so as not to say very many.

In short, you will have understood, I love Everdell for its soothing theme, its magnificent illustrations, and its gameplay that is both simple and effective. An essential in a game library.
