Review Discordia

What's this?

In Discordia, develop your Roman city while repelling barbarian attacks from Germania.

How do you play?

The game consists of up to 4 years, with each year having 5 seasons.

➡️ Each season, each player takes turns taking actions. The first player can choose from the 3 dice, while the other players can only choose from the remaining 2 dice. The value of the die determines the available action options.

Each player can perform a main action and possibly secondary actions in any order:

➡ Take a City Tile: Take a City Tile from the column below the chosen die and place it in your city.
➡ Deployment: Deploy your workers to specific locations in your city
➡ Take a City Expansion: Expand your city with additional city extensions.
➡ Development: Progress on the Development Track to obtain bonuses.
➡ Take Stars: Take 1 or 2 Stars and add them to your reserve.

If the color and value of the chosen die corresponds to a location in a building in your city, you can carry out a special deployment and thus place workers.

If the chosen die is on the same location of the round boat you perform the associated bonus.

When you are allowed to take a Tower, choose from the available options and place it on top of a Port.

Modifier tokens can modify the value of a die by increasing or decreasing it by 1

There are privilege tiles which provide permanent effects and decrees which can be fulfilled to obtain immediate bonuses.

🔚 At the end of the season you will have to succeed in fighting barbarians and have sufficient military power.

If no premature victory occurs (i.e. if you have not managed to get rid of all your workers), the player with the fewest workers in their reserve wins.

Is it good?

Discordia stands out for its original mechanic of discarding workers to score points, creating a palpable tension throughout the game. Players optimize their actions by intelligently combining dice and buildings to get rid of as many workers as possible. This game offers strategic depth appreciated by experts, while remaining accessible to novices thanks to games that are not too long. It will particularly appeal to players who like to chain combos together.

If the quality of the material is impeccable, Discordia suffers from a theme that is not very immersive, or even a little absent. The worker discard mechanic, while essential to the gameplay, can also prove repetitive over time for some players.

In conclusion, Discordia is an original and strategic game that will appeal to fans of resource management and optimization. Its worker discard mechanic brings a touch of novelty and appreciable tension.
