Spots : Spots, dice, and lots of flair

What's this?

Spots ! is a family board game that combines simplicity and strategy, featuring spotted dogs to complete.

How do you play?

Each player has “Doggy” cards with spot patterns to fill by placing corresponding dice.

In the game “Spots or Encore!”, each player must choose an action tile from those available on their turn. These tiles determine the specific actions the player can take, influencing their strategy and risk-taking.

1. Rolling Dice:

Most action tiles allow you to roll a certain number of dice. For example, a tile might indicate rolling 3 dice, then rolling additional ones one at a time, with the option to stop at any time.

2. Obtaining Nonos Tokens:

Some actions grant Nonos tokens, which serve as wild cards to reroll all the dice in a turn if the result is not satisfactory.

3. Acquiring New Doggy Cards:

Some tiles allow you to draw new Doggy cards, thus adding additional objectives to complete.

4. Burying Dice:

Dice that cannot be placed on the Doggie cards must be buried under the player’s doghouse. If the sum of the buried dice exceeds 7, all dice placed on the unvalidated Doggie cards are lost.

5. Validating a Doggie:

When a player has completed all the tasks on a Doggie card, they can choose to validate it using an action. However, this takes a full turn, unless all of the player’s Doggie cards are completed at the same time, allowing immediate validation without losing a turn.

Is it good?

Spots is a family board game that relies on simple and accessible mechanics. The principle is easy to understand: the first to fill six dog cards wins.

It has this “stop or encore” side: we hesitate to stop cautiously or to try to move forward faster, at the risk of losing everything.

There are a lot of “tower” tiles, which provides many different actions and a significant renewal.

“Dice game” often means “part of luck”, and yes, the part of chance is very present – which adds fun, but can also frustrate if luck is not there.

In addition, after several games, the game can become repetitive.

In summary, Spots is a light and fun game that will do the job perfectly if you are looking for an accessible game without being revolutionary.
