Review Wyrmspan

What's this?

Build a Dragon Sanctuary by excavating caverns, attracting dragons, and activating their abilities to accumulate Victory Points (VP).

How do you play?

In Wyrmspan, each player can perform only one action per turn among those available. Here is a detailed explanation of the main actions:

➡️ Excavate (Dig a Cave)

Objective: Free up a new space in a cavern to place a dragon there. You must excavate in one of your three caverns.

Select a Cave card from your hand and place it in the excavated space.

➡️ Attract a Dragon

Objective: Play a Dragon card from your hand and add it to an excavated cavern. Select a Dragon card from your hand.

Choose an excavated space:

Place the dragon in an excavated space from left to right in a cavern corresponding to its preferred habitat.

➡️ Explore a Cave

Objective: Activate the “Activation” abilities of the dragons and caverns of one of your caverns.
Move the adventurer from left to right along a cavern.

Activate the “Activation” abilities of the dragons or caverns encountered.

End of Round

At the end of each round, after all players have passed, we score the end-of-round objectives and prepare for the next round.

The game ends at the end of the fourth round.

Is it good?

In Wyrmspan, each player can perform only one action per turn among those available. Here is a detailed explanation of the main actions:

➡️ Excavate (Dig a Cave)

Wyrmspan takes the proven mechanics of Wingspan and transposes them into a fantasy universe populated by dragons. Although slightly more complex, the game remains accessible to a wide audience. Here, you will have to build your own game engine, optimizing your actions to maximize your gains. No more dice tower, make way for more strategic resource management. The pace remains fluid and more dynamic, guaranteeing games without downtime.

In terms of theme, Wingspan maintains a slight lead for me. Its educational and playful approach around ornithology is particularly appreciable. Although Wyrmspan offers a remarkable creation of hundreds of different dragons, the theme remains more abstract for me. Nevertheless, the quality of the illustrations is still as neat in both games.

Replay value is there thanks to the four draconic guilds, the many end-of-round objectives and the wide variety of Dragons and Caverns cards. Even if some effects are similar, this does not harm the richness of the gameplay.

In conclusion, Wyrmspan is an interesting evolution of Wingspan, offering a more strategic and advanced gaming experience. Wingspan fans will find something to enjoy, while discovering a new universe.
