Review Paper Tales : Édition intégrale

What's this?

Players develop their Kingdom by deploying Units and constructing Buildings. The objective is to earn as many Legend Points as possible after 4 rounds of play.

How do you play?

A game is played in 4 rounds, each made up of 6 successive phases. Players play simultaneously during each phase.

➡️ 1. Recruitment Phase:

– Each player receives 5 Unit cards from the draw pile. Each player keeps one and passes the others to their neighbor. This process repeats until each player has 5 cards.

➡️ 2. Deployment Phase:

– Players choose which Units from their hand they wish to put into play in their Kingdom. When everyone has placed the cards they want to play, all players simultaneously reveal the Units they have just played, and pay their cost in Gold. They can keep one card and must discard the others.

➡️ 3. War Phase:

– Players wage wars against their opponents by comparing the strength of their Units. A player wins a war if he has strength greater than or equal to that of his opponent.

➡️ 4. Income phase:

– Each player gains 2 Gold from the reserve, plus Gold
reported by the effects indicated by the income icon on their cards and buildings.

➡️ 5. Construction phase:

– Players can construct Buildings by paying the cost indicated on the Building cards.

➡️ 6. Age Phase:

– Older Units die and the others age. Players add Age tokens to their Units.

➡️ End of game:

At the end of the game, the player with the most Legend Points is declared the winner. Legend Points are accumulated through wars, constructions and card effects.

It is good ?

Paper Tales is a deckbuilding game that is simple, fast and elegant. The mechanic of aging units, which must be replaced quickly, introduces an interesting dimension of short-term planning. This mechanic offers a unique gaming experience and a strategic approach different from classic games of the genre.

The games are relatively quick, generally lasting 30 minutes and are therefore ideal for short gaming sessions or for chaining several games. The draft system, common to many deckbuilding games, adds an additional layer of strategy and anticipation. It is essential to anticipate the choices of your opponents and adapt your strategy accordingly. The objective is to build effective combinations between units and buildings, but the limited duration of the game does not allow for the development of a game engine as complex as in other games.

Although the base game may seem repetitive after a few games, the two expansions bring a variety of new cards and mechanics that significantly extend the game’s lifespan.

The graphic style is very neat and the original illustrations add an undeniable touch of aesthetics.

Paper Tales offers moderate strategic depth, increased replayability with the expansions and an attractive visual design. It is particularly recommended for players who enjoy drafting and fast-paced management games
