What's this?

Maracaibo is a strategic board game set in the 17th century Caribbean. Players take on the role of navigators and adventurers seeking to increase their influence with the great European nations (England, Spain, France), while amassing fame and fortune.

How do you play?

Rules Summary:

The game is played in 4 rounds, each representing a decade of sailing.

Main Actions:

➡️ Sailing: Players move their ship from 1 to 7 locations on the board, between villages and cities.

➡️ Specific Actions: Depending on the position of the ship, you can deliver goods, complete quests, fight for a nation, or upgrade your ship.

Action Details:

➡️ Combat: Support a nation by revealing a combat token, obtain rewards such as influence or victory points, or annex a region for it.

➡️ Exploration: Move your explorer to obtain unique rewards, such as points or doubloons.

➡️ Deliveries and constructions: Deliver goods to unlock additional actions. This allows you to remove a disk from your ship and place it on the market to unlock bonuses or abilities

➡️ Quest: On a location with a Quest tile, you can pay the necessary cost, which sometimes includes cards with specific goods or objects.

➡️ Village Actions: Buy a card by paying its cost in doubloons to add it to your play space.

Draw Phase:

At the end of your turn, during the draw phase, you can take additional cards to replenish your hand up to the limit.

Is it good?

Maracaibo is a complex strategy game offering a wide variety of possibilities. The mix of mechanics, such as worker placement, hand management and engine building, makes it a rich and deep title. The story mode brings an interesting narrative touch, changing the board from game to game for increased immersion.

However, the ergonomics suffers from some flaws. The personal board, the cards or the main board overloaded with icons, can be confusing at first. In addition, the quality of the illustrations leaves something to be desired. These elements can hinder the initial learning. The setup is also very long.

The game offers a great freedom of action, which can lead to quite long games, especially with four players. The interaction is mainly indirect, each player developing their own strategy but the mechanics of the nations will be common to all players. An excellent idea, you will have to adapt to the other players. The same goes for the tempo of the game which will be given by the players.

All in all, Maracaibo is an excellent game for experienced players, ready to invest time to master its subtleties. If the perfectible ergonomics do not put you off, you will appreciate the depth of this title and the richness of its strategic choices.
