Review Horrified: Greek Monsters

What's this?

Horrified: Greek Monsters is a cooperative game where players battle Greek mythological monsters.

How do you play?

Each turn is divided into two phases:

Heroes’ phase:

Available actions (according to the number indicated on your sheet):
➡️ Move around the board.

➡️ Pick up or exchange items.

➡️ Guide a legend to reach a safe place.

➡️ Complete a step to weaken a monster (by using specific items or completing specific objectives).

➡️ Defeat a Monster if you have already solved the Monster’s challenge.

➡️ Use the Favor of the Gods action written on your Hero tile.

➡️ Discover a face-down lair.

The heroes work together to optimize their actions.

2. Monsters’ phase:

Draw an Event card and apply its effects.

Move the monsters around the board following the instructions.

Monsters attack heroes or villagers if they are in range.

Fighting monsters

Each monster has its own mechanics and objectives to be defeated. For example:

Medusa: Destroy its protective statues before fighting it directly.
Minotaur: Lure the monster into a labyrinth using specific items.
End of the game

If all monsters are eliminated: victory!

If the panic meter reaches the limit or if the Event deck is exhausted before eliminating all monsters: defeat.

Is it good?

Horrified: Greek Monsters is an excellent introduction to cooperative board games, both for families and for players wishing to familiarize themselves with this type of mechanics.

The “collect and deliver” mechanic works here effectively and combines with challenges specific to each monster, offering appreciable replayability and several levels of difficulty. The material is of good quality, the illustrations are neat and the rules clear, facilitating learning.

However, the mythological theme, very present in the illustrations, is not always felt as strongly in the gameplay. In addition, after several games, a certain repetitiveness can be felt and the game perhaps lacks a “wow” element to mark the spirits.

In summary, Horrified: Greek Monsters is a solid and accessible cooperative game, ideal for quick games. It will please fans of simple and effective games, but those looking for a more original or complex experience could be a little disappointed.
