Review After Us

What's this?

We are in 2082 in a world in full reconstruction where humanity has become extinct, you are at the head of a tribe of monkeys and you must guide them on the path to collective intelligence.

After Us is a deck building and resource management game with an original and intuitive combo system in which each player leads a tribe of monkeys.

How do you play?

The game consists of 3 phases:

🔸The “Life of the tribe” phase: everyone simultaneously reveals the first 4 cards of their deck then organizes their cards into an assembly of 4 cards, from left to right, in the order of their choice. Once the Assembly is constituted, we proceed to its resolution.

You activate the cartridges of your Assembly to gain resources and victory points, or to benefit from specific effects.

🔸The “Arrival of new monkeys” phase: everyone secretly chooses one of their 4 action tokens and places it face down in front of their personal board.

Once everyone has made their choice, the tokens are revealed simultaneously. Players immediately earn the bonus indicated at the top of their token.

Everyone then has the opportunity to recruit one (and only one) monkey, of the type indicated on their action token.

At any time during phase 2, as soon as all action tokens have been revealed, it is possible to spend 2 identical resources to copy the bonus (and only the bonus) of a single action token played by a neighboring player.

🔸The “Rest” phase: everyone takes their Assembly cards and places them face up in their discard pile.

There are also 3 objects that are selected randomly when setting up the game.

Each item can be used only once per turn by each person around the table, during the indicated phases and in exchange for the indicated number of Energy.

🔸The game ends at the end of a phase where a player reaches, or exceeds, 80 victory points, this person wins the game.

Is it good?

After Us succeeds in being a fast game, without downtime and accessible. It presents a new and satisfying card mechanic, offering clever pleasure in assembling the cartridges of your cards.

The rounds come quickly, with an acceleration towards the end, encouraging players to watch their opponents because the game is a race. However, it should be noted that the interaction is not very present, which could leave the game lacking depth or originality as the games go on. However, this feature isn’t particularly bothersome given the fast-paced nature of the game.

The illustrations are a big favorite, magnificent and undeniably adding to the visual appeal of the game. In conclusion, if you don’t mind the lack of interaction and you are looking for a fast, addictive and effective card game, After Us deserves your attention.
